Australia's Copyright Laws Under Siege by AI Companies

The International Confederation of Music Publishers (ICMP) has warned that AI companies are attempting to change copyright laws in Australia to allow training without compensation. The ICMP, which represents major music publishers, has shown that AI models like Google's Gemini can reproduce lyrics from Australian artists, including Kylie Minogue and Nick Cave.

Government and opposition members of a parliamentary committee on artificial intelligence have described the current situation as a stalemate. The independent senator David Pocock has raised concerns that the committee's position on copyright may be predetermined by the prime minister. The ICMP has been tracking how AI companies are attempting to change copyright law in different jurisdictions to allow training.

AI companies claim their models are not trained on Australian content due to copyright rules. However, the ICMP has shown that AI models can reproduce lyrics from Australian artists. Anthropic's special envoy, Jeffrey Bleich, told the AI committee that the company is not trying to dictate terms but has shared information with the Australian government about training and its implications.

OpenAI's chief of economic policy, Adam Cohen, said the fair use exception in US law fundamentally protects the development of new technology. The ICMP has expressed concerns that undermining copyright protection would have a profound impact on civil society and that copyright-protected material should only be available for AI training with the rights holder's explicit prior authorization.
