Maja Chwalinska completed an impressive comeback to capture the Dongfeng Voyah Wuhan Open, defeating Great Britain's Sonay Kartal with a final score of 2-6, 6-4, 6-2. The 25-year-old Polish left-hander overcame a set and break deficit to claim the biggest victory of her career in a match that lasted 2 hours and 43 minutes.

The triumph represents Chwalinska's first career title at any tour level. By winning the tournament, she became the fourth woman since 2009 to claim her maiden career title at the WTA 1000 level. Chwalinska also became the first southpaw to secure a WTA 1000 trophy since Petra Kvitova in 2023, joining an elite group of players whose first major tour-level crown came at this prestigious tier.

Sonay Kartal, who was ranked 170th in the world at the start of the event, had taken command of the opening set and established an early advantage before running out of steam. Her breakthrough tournament run allowed her to reach a WTA 1000 final for the first time, marking a significant achievement just months after returning from a serious back injury that kept her away from the tour for six months.

During the post-match ceremony, Kartal praised her rival's performance and acknowledged the incredible nature of the contest. The defeated finalist also expressed appreciation for the tournament staff and organizers, noting that she was not expecting to compete in a major final so soon after her return to high-level play. Despite the loss, Kartal secured a record-setting position as the lowest-ranked British player to reach a WTA 1000 final since the format's introduction in 2009.
