A grass fire at a Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Wainwright in Alberta has caused a tragedy that has left four soldiers dead and dozens injured, with many in critical condition. The fire broke out during high-intensity combat training at the base on Saturday afternoon, with winds up to 96km/h feeding the blaze. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
The military identified the four soldiers killed as Sgt Morgan Wong of the Loyal Edmonton Regiment and Privates Shaun Farrell, Aidan Goulding and Hayden Lykkemark of the 3rd Battalion, Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry. The fire spread quickly, with military officials initially believing it was contained before a sudden wind shift sent flames racing toward the soldiers. The fire was a kilometre away when the wind shifted, which is unusual for a fire to move that distance in 36 seconds.
The fire swept into the area where the simulated attacks were taking place, crossing established firebreaks before being contained with help from municipal firefighters. A 'code orange' was declared to coordinate the medical response for patients being transported from Wainwright. Health staff in Edmonton said this number of patients would overwhelm the city's healthcare facilities, with Dr Warren Thirsk, an emergency department physician at the Royal Alexandra hospital, describing it as a disaster that would occur once every 15 to 25 years.
The Alberta premier, Danielle Smith, described the fire as 'heartbreaking' and said it had affected many military personnel. She extended her deepest condolences to the families who have lost loved ones and wished those who have been injured a full recovery. The premier said many of the injured would require 'weeks and months' of specialised, intensive medical care. The Nato military committee also offered condolences, with Adm Giuseppe Cavo Dragone, the chair of the Nato military committee, expressing their deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives in the tragedy.
