At least 19 people were killed and 25 others injured in a stampede at the Chorebagan Durga Puja pavilion in Kolkata on Saturday evening. The disaster occurred on Maha Saptami, a major day of the festival, when an announcement by the organisers and the onset of heavy rain triggered a sudden surge as devotees waited outside the structure to exit.

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendhu Adhikari, who visited the scene and the local medical college, announced that the state government would provide 2.5 million rupees and a Group D government job for each family who lost a member. The state also pledged 500,000 rupees and full medical coverage for the injured. A high-level judicial inquiry headed by a sitting High Court judge has been launched, and authorities have collected CCTV footage to identify those responsible for crowd management failures.

In response to the tragedy, police detained 12 individuals, including the private security guards and officials who were on duty at the pavilion. The administration advised several other major festival venues in the city to temporarily close their pavilions to prevent similar risks. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his sorrow on social media and announced a separate ex gratia payment of 200,000 rupees for the deceased and 50,000 rupees for those injured.

Fatal crowd incidents have recurred at large religious and public events across India in recent years, prompting renewed calls for stricter crowd management protocols. The death toll has not increased since the initial 19 fatalities reported by the state government. Officials confirmed that several bodies have been released to their families, while postmortems and identification processes for the remaining victims are underway.
