General Ronald Clark, the chief of the US Army Pacific, has called for a show of enhanced military muscle in Asia to build up deterrence amid concerns about China's ambitions. This move comes as the Pentagon has been less outspoken in public about China, backing away from what Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has dismissed as 'peacocking'.

Despite the shift in tone from Washington, the military has continued to work on strengthening deterrence. US Army Pacific has taken on a bigger role, including sending weapons on temporary deployments to the Philippines, Japan, and other places that would matter greatly in a war with China, including one over Taiwan.
